Seeing the motor pool guys reminds me of SA Hartwell who was assigned to FO Nuernberg (or maybe 511th HQ) at some point in 1966 or 1967. Ray spoke excellent German, via DLIWC, but had majored in Russian in college. To keep himself sharp, he'd periodically go down to the motor pool and chat up the local wage rate guys - many of whom were Polish. He'd speak Russian; they'd speak Polish. I'm sure the fact (if not the substance) of these conversations was of interest to hostile intelligence. Can't we be sure, in retrospect, that we had a few MfS employees on our payroll, too.
